Wish scrolls - background story

"Wish scrolls. Or magic scrolls, from Ethiopia.
Containing a magic spell, or a blessing to cure someone who was severely ill. The contents of the scroll were cut to exactly the same height as the person who needed to be cured". That was roughly what I read, during my study BA Bookbinding, at Roehampton Institute (now Surrey University). The images I saw were long ribbons of vellum, with somewhat naivistic angels with big eyes, and text.

 

But I never saw the exterior of the scrolls, or the carrier of them. Now you google "Ethiopian magic scroll" and feast your eyes...but back then it was me and my imagination.

My adventurous husband went to the Sahara desert for a trek with camels carrying their gear, camping under the desert stars, singing with the nomads. I made a wish scroll for him to take with him, as a protective amulet, token of love, a talisman for great things to happen. He carried it against his skin for the trek, and when he came back I was amazed to find the scroll buffed to a high shine and darker of colour - but of course, leather is a porous, natural material and it will soak up the oils from our skin, thus becoming truly ours!

An interview with Mia from Mia Illuzia and Spirit Carrier

Mia is a long-time friend and a fellow traveller on the path of Life. That's how I know her. Now it's your turn to get to know her and her beautiful work! Enjoy!

1. Tell us about yourself and about your business

I’m a Finnish artist currently living and working in the UK. I create jewellery and accessories with natural crystals. My work most often includes raw gemstones, with references to aspects of crystal healing. I also make artistic yoga meditation malas with gemstones, inspired by ancient Tibetan Buddhist prayer beads. My “Wisdom Keeper” range includes leather accessories such as talisman pouches, tribal style iPad cases and decorative book pendants. My pieces could be referred to as ‘alternative jewellery’ as I rarely use metals in my work, preferring the techniques of knotting and braiding with various cords and fibres instead. I make everything painstakingly by hand, and mostly all my pieces are unique and one-of-a-kind, not multiples. I sell my work online through my own website at www.miailluzia.com .


2. How did you end up doing the work you're doing now?

 Originally I went to university in Finland to study art pedagogy, to become an art teacher for secondary school level. I delved into printmaking, textile printing, mosaics, sculpture, painting and photography. I had also mounted a couple of solo shows of my water colour paintings before embarking on an exchange year in the UK. Studying art in London, I discovered contemporary design bookbinding. I got very passionate about it at the time and decided to swap for a bookbinding degree in England instead, and never returned to Finland. I consequently worked as a book artist for about fifteen years.

 My bookbinding years taught me an enormous amount about the technical aspects of the craft. The meticulous traditional skills involved honed my abilities with tools and materials. I grew up technically very finicky. High quality craftsmanship was permanently placed highest on my list. But I never particularly enjoyed the repetitive technical stages in making leather-bound books. I endured them, but my heart was still most in the sculptural, artistic book works that dealt with the symbology of the book form from the point of artistic expression. After all, I had come to bookbinding from a creative background. Contemplating the visual elements, their relationships, textures, colours and sculptural arrangements in my work was what I wanted more of.

 Moving to the Middle East brought a change. Bookbinding materials weren’t readily available and had to be brought in from Europe. It all got quite complicated. I had already felt a few inner rumblings about wanting to explore further creative paths when, in 2009, I was finally completely swept away by my long-standing fascination with crystals. I had always been collecting stones, but suddenly all these amazing crystals and minerals just placed themselves on my way, like wanting me to take notice. I was hooked. A wish took shape within me that I’d like to be able to wear some of these crystals, and not leave them behind when I go out of the house. I had never been particularly interested in mainstream jewellery at all. My longing was all about wearing the crystals themselves, not about jewellery. And as serendipity would arrange it, I came across a lovely lady and her wonderful crystal macramé pendants on a local art market. She also taught workshops so attending one was another step to the direction that I was strongly pulled to at the time. I think it was working with my crystals that also helped me through the following difficult transitions to bring me where I am now. So now I’m exploring stones and making them into personal talismans for others who might benefit from what I think of as “jewellery with a deeper meaning”.

3. What is your favourite tool and material?

 When it comes to tools, I nowadays use so few compared to my bookbinding days. My fingers, my eyes and my intuition are the most precious tools for me at the moment. Occasionally I still use leather, especially in my ‘Wisdom Keeper’ range which includes talismanic iPad cases in the style of ancient tribal leather pouches. Making those requires me to punch holes one by one, for about 500 holes per case, and for that my best friend is a Japanese drill punch. Fantastic tool. I had a customer once come in the art studio and he saw the drill punch on my desk. I let him try it out and he went on and bought one, just to keep on punching paper, as apparently it was as satisfying as popping bubble wrap!
Among the stones I work with, occasionally some crystal individual rises up as an enormous favourite. Almost so luminous that I delay working with it out of fear of maybe not doing justice to it. But then, eventually the time is just right, and elements fall in place. At this moment I seem to be really drawn to Carnelian, which I’ve felt quite indifferent towards before. All elestials, skeletal crystals, never cease to fascinate me, and the peculiarly shaped flint stones I find on my visits to the beach always fire up my imagination. Crystals and stones aside, I like natural textiles and fibres. Among my recent loves are unbleached sari silk and cotton lace.


4. What are you grateful for in this moment?

I’m very grateful that the transitioning period of the past couple of years has turned out well after all, and that my four decades of life and creative making has shaped into such a fulfilling way of working. I’m grateful for all the incredible individuals who get in contact with me, who often tell me their own crystal stories, and who resonate with the crystals that come to them via my art studio. And the more I concentrate on pinpointing what I’m grateful for, the more the list seems to grow – I could just keep on going now! I’m grateful for a friend who had the courage to step onto a new creative path, as that also made my own inner whispers to that direction more audible. Also, every single day when the sun shines is an incredibly uplifting feeling for me. Having moved from a country where the sun “always” shines back to one where you’re lucky if it does, I certainly do appreciate it. Not that I mind rain, but really, to see the sun’s rays never ever fails to make me happy.

5. Are you preparing something at the moment that will soon get out there in the world - something you already want to share?

It feels like I’m always short of time to develop ideas into physical objects at the pace I’d like to. So many new thoughts remain at the stage of inspiration in my mind for way longer than I’d like them to. I’ve had a range of stone talisman pendants in mind for the past two years already, something that I nurture and enjoy at the level of an idea, to the point that it even seems scary to attempt to make them in case reality would turn out to be less than the idea I’ve built up in my mind. But I’m all the time preparing something, trying out and testing material combinations and making new discoveries. I do intend to concentrate more on the very organic, ecological pendants that I’ve recently been making. Incorporating eco-plant dyeing methods, naturals silks, cotton lace and linen into my jewellery range. This relates to the crystal healing aspect of my work, strengthening my offering to Reiki therapists, healers and those individuals who prefer their jewellery without any metals for example.


6. Who is your hero, source of inspiration or idol?

Just last week I read a great definition of what a hero is.  In Christopher Reeve’s words “A hero is an ordinary individual who finds the strength to persevere and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles.” I’m incredibly inspired by a multitude of artists, who keep showing up in their studio, keep on making thoughtful work that’s important to them, and bring more beauty into the world. The natural world is always an endless source of inspiration for me, and especially the rugged seascapes of my native Finland where I try to return to recharge my creative batteries once a year.



7. Do you have other things you're passionate about, next to your work?

When I still worked as a bookbinder and was asked this, my eyes would lit up and I’d say: ”Crystals!” Now I work with crystals and still find it difficult to think of any other answer! Although, earlier this year I did come across something that has turned into a bit of a passion too. I attended a marvellous eco plant dyeing workshop taught by the textile artist India Flint. Bundling up silks and cottons to be magically transformed in the dye bath has become quite addictive to me since! I would also passionately want to live by the sea again, having grown up by one. If that dream turns into reality one day, then I’ll be passionately beach-combing for the rest of my life.

Interview met Laura

Wie is de vrouw achter het Nina's Nature-parfum "Laura"? Lees en ontdek... ;)

Hoi Laura! Vertel in je eigen woorden over jezelf - wie je bent, wat je fijn vindt, wat je allemaal doet, wat je passies zijn.

Wie ik ben weet ik nooit zo goed, want dat verandert steeds (en toch ook weer niet), maar ik weet wel waar ik van hou en waar ik blij van wordt: zingen, muziek maken, dansen, schrijven, schilderen, koken, tuinieren, reizen, leren, nieuwe dingen ontdekken, dingen maken, dromen. Het leven blijft één grote ontdekkingsreis voor mij. Ik weet wel dat ik beter gedij in een warm klimaat en dat ik niet zo goed tegen kou kan, daar klap ik van dicht. In de zomer bloei ik op en geniet ik enorm van alles wat ik doe, in de winter heb ik eigenlijk nergens zin in.

Kan je ons mee nemen voor een sight-seeing: wat heeft je tot hier en nu gebracht? Wat zijn de belangrijkste ontwikkelingen geweesd voor jou om "hier, nu" te komen?

Toen ik van de middelbare school afkwam ben ik naar Midden-Amerika gereisd voor een half jaar en later nog naar Cuba. Sindsdien ben ik verslaafd aan Latin muziek en ben ik zelf ook gaan zingen, eerst met de band van mijn vriend (die van Puerto Ricaanse afkomst is) en nu schrijf en componeer en zing ik ook mijn eigen muziek; dat had ik 10 jaar geleden nooit gedacht...
Daarnaast blijf ik ook mijn beeldende werk maken (waar ik eigenlijk voor ben opgeleid) en doe ik een leraren opleiding omdat ik mijn praktijk als autonoom kunstenaar graag wil combineren met lesgeven en het opzetten van onderwijsprojecten.
Ik heb onlangs een stage gedaan in Mexico als kunst docente en ik zo eigenlijk heel graag daar naar toe verhuizen, om onderwijsprojecten te doen en muziek te maken.

 
Wat is je lievelings gereedschap en materiaal? Waarmee werk je het liefst? Ik weet dat je multitalented bent, dus er zullen zeker meerdere "gereedschapskisten" zijn - maar noem een favoriet per passie!

Voor de muziek is dat toch wel de computer omdat je met sampling en digitaal opnemen heel makkelijk kan componeren en dingen uit kan proberen, bovendien leer je heel veel van jezelf opnemen. Daarnaast ben ik verliefd geworden op de gitaar, waar ik nog niet heel veel op kan, maar het geluid dat ik er uit krijg klinkt al zo mooi...
Voor schilderen is dat toch wel olieverf, de kleuren zijn gewoon zo mooi intens en het droogt lekker langzaam waardoor je heel veel gelaagdheid in je werk kan creëren. De laaste tijd ben ik ook met chocola aan het schilderen (wel alleen hele pure, donkere chocola) en dat bevalt ook heel goed.
Ik ben nu ook bezig te expirimenteren met het maken van papier en het recycelen van allerlei materialen, omdat ik dat graag ook in mijn onderwijs praktijk wil ontwikkelen. Ik vind het heel belangerijk dat kinderen leren recycelen en leren nadenken over verschillende materialen en wat je daar allemaal mee kan maken.

Is er een les geweest in je leven die je met ons zou willen delen?

De belangrijkste les die ik heb geleerd is dat je heel erg voorzichtig met je lichaam moet omspringen en met je energie. Ik heb een periode in mijn leven heel veel gerookt, ongezond gegeten en weinig geslapen en dat ging op een gegeven moment zijn tol eisen. Het kan jaren duren voordat je weer terug in balans bent en als je lichaam niet in balans is funcioneer je gewoon niet goed. Als je zelf niet lekker in je vel zit, kun je ook aan je omgeving niet je zorg, energie en vreugde doorgeven, dus het is belangrijk dat je echt goed voor jezelf zorgt als je er ook voor anderen wil zijn.

Waar ben je dankbaar voor op dit moment?

Voor heel erg veel, ik voel mij iedere dag ontzettend gezegend, door alle lieve mensen die ik om mij heen heb, en vooral mijn vriend, de hoeveelheid plezier en warmte en creativiteit die we iedere dag met elkaar delen, het werk dat ik doe, alle planten die in mijn tuin groeien, het eten wat ik eet, de zon die schijnt (als die dat tenminste doet) alles wat ik iedere dag leer en ontdek....het huis waar ik nu woon, de dingen die mij blijven inspireren, de geweldige zanglerares/geadopteerde oma die bij mij om de hoek woont, de lieve kindertjes op mijn werk...het park waar we altijd leuke activiteiten met ze doen, ga zo maar door...

Wij zijn heel benieuwd naar wat er komen gaat... Heb je iets in de voorbereiding wat binnenkort te zien of te beleven is?

Ik heb binnenkort een nieuw liedje uit, het is het eerste en oudste liedje dat ik ooit geschreven heb, maar helemaal opgepimpt door een hele goede pianist, bassist en percussionist en met een rap van Fernando!

Wie is je held, inspiratiebron of voorbeeld?

Ik denk dat Fernando mijn grootste inspiratiebron is; hij is als muziekant heel ervaren en hij vult mij heel goed aan, maar hij laat mij toch ook heel erg mijn eigen ding doen. Hij is ook iemand die heel veel tegenslagen in zijn leven heeft moeten verwerken, maar ondanks dat toch heel sterk in zichzelf is blijven geloven en een heel helder doel voor ogen heeft, waar hij niet van af wijkt: muziek maken in voor en tegenspoed. Bovendien heeft hij altijd in mij geloofd en mij aangemoedigd, terwijl er genoeg mensen waren die mij adviseerden om mij iets anders dan muziek bezig te houden...
Daarnaast heb ik een vriendin, Mara, die ook echt een enorme inspiratiebron voor mij is, niet alleen omdat we vaak dezelfde dingen interessant vinden, en er ook wel overeenkomsten zijn in de manier waarop we werken, maar vooral omdat ze dingen altijd helemaal zelfstandig oppakt, zichzelf alles aanleert wat ze moet weten, en dan ook nog heel goed is in alles wat ze doet. Ze is een geweldige zangeres en componist en schrijfster en ook nog een ontzettend goede tekanaar/illustrator en beeldend kunstenaar. Ze gaat gewoon door in voor- en tegenspoed, met of zonder backing, produceert volledig zelfstandig haar eerste album, met niet alleen geweldige muziek, maar ook nog prachtig artwork. Daar heb ik heel veel bewondering voor. Daarnaast is ze ook nog iemand die andere mensen heel erg stimuleert en helpt als dat nodig is. Mara is een soort sprookjesfiguur en alles wat ze aanraakt verandert in iets magisch.....
Verder ben ik op het moment heel erg geïnspireerd door een kunstenares met dezelfde naam als ik; Laura Anderson Barbata. Ze is een kunstenares die in Mexico en New York werkt, zer werkt -net als ik zelf- in vele disciplines en maakt kunst educatie en uitwisseling van culturele kennis onderdeel van haar kunstprojecten. Zo heeft ze met de Yanomami (een stam in Venezuela die nog helemaal in het regenwoud leeft) zelf papier gemaakt waarop zei de mythen en verhalen van hun volk schreven en en uitbeeldden on druktechnieken, met de materialen (vezels, inkt etc.) uit het regenwoud. Ze heeft ook een project gedaan waarbij ze steltlopers uit NY, Trinidad en Mexico samen liet werken vanuit hun verschillende culturele achtergronden. Dat vindt ik echt geweldig, het idee dat nieuwe tradities en vormen van communicatie kunnen ontstaan door de uitwisseling van verschillende cultrurele uitingen en kunstvormen.

In een onbegrensde wereld, wat zou je het liefst doen?

Ik zou heel graag in Midden -Amerika /Caribisch gebied wonen in een mooi ecologisch "zelf-voorzienend" huis met een grote moestuin, en daar werken als onderwijzeres/kunstenares. Ik wil graag community art projecten doen, waarbij het maken van kunst tegelijkertijd een onderwijs project is, waarbij mensen vooral leren hoeveel kracht en verbeelding ze hebben en hoe ze die in kunnen zetten om dingen te maken en oplossingen te bedenken. En natuurlijk als zangeres, samen met Fernando en zijn band. Het huis heeft ook een mooie grote opname studio met een heleboel apparatuur en instrumenten waar muzieklessen gegeven worden en allemaal nieuwe muziek wordt opgenomen en geproduceerd wordt door ons. We hebben ook een band waarmee we door heel Midden - en Zuid Amerika touren, en misschien op een dag ook naar Europa (maar natuurlijk alleen als het daar zomer is : )  )
Uiteindelijk hoop ik andere mensen ook blij te maken met wat ik doe en maak, naast dat ik er zelf heel erg blij van wordt!

Luxe pakket met alle parfum testers

Een "Luxe pakket met alle parfum testers" is mijn cadeau* aan de klant - een testerset met testers van alle Nina's Nature parfums, in een handgemaakte tasje. Ik vind het geweldig als mensen de hele collectie willen uitproberen!

Elke tasje is zorgvuldig met de hand gemaakt (door mij) van stoffen en materialen die mooi bij elkaar passen. Elke tasje is ook anders. Omdat de collectie natuurlijke parfums steeds groeit, verandert ook de maat van het tasje. De materialen zijn telkens anders, omdat ik van creativiteit en van intunen bij de klant houd.

Ik vind het prachtig, zo'n collectie van alle geuren bij elkaar. Een moment-opname, een document. Het maken van het allemaal neemt veel tijd...maar dat heb ik er graag voor over. Dat iemand de tijd neemt om alle de geuren tot zich toe te nemen, kijk, daar word ik heel blij van!


* De Luxe pakket met alle parfum testers kost 79,- (juni 2013). Dat is een zeer voordelige manier om kennis te maken met de gehele collectie. Het tasje is een "bonus" erbij.
